Overview

The Food and Beverage Assistant is integral to the smooth functioning of the Food & Beverage Department, which encompasses the main dining hall and various food service areas across campus. This role focuses on ensuring efficient meal service, upholding hygiene and cleanliness standards, assisting with basic food preparation, and delivering exceptional customer service to students, staff, and the broader school community. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, reliable, and a collaborative team player with strong communication skills and the flexibility to work various shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily operations of the Food & Beverage department, including the main dining hall and additional campus venues.
  • Assist with meal service, including setup, serving, and clearing meals for students and the school community, ensuring efficiency and adherence to dietary and quality standards.
  • Maintain service stations by keeping water dispensers, condiments, cutlery, napkins, and crockery stocked and clean.
  • Prepare the dining area for service, which may involve arranging furniture and trolleys, as well as cleaning and putting away items after service.
  • Prepare service areas and equipment (e.g., hot holdings, food warmers) as directed.
  • Support the kitchen team with basic food preparation tasks (e.g., portioning snacks, adding garnishes), following HACCP protocols under supervision.
  • Monitor and record food temperatures and maintain required checklists or documentation daily.
  • Ensure proper labelling of food items with appropriate details, including date, time, allergen information, and expiry as per policy.
  • Maintain cleanliness of dining areas by wiping tables, cleaning surfaces, sweeping floors, and ensuring an overall presentable space at all times.
  • Adhere to personal hygiene and general hygiene standards, including PPE regulations.
  • Address basic inquiries related to the menu (e.g., vegetarian options, ingredients, allergen information).
  • Manage queue flow and assist with Vircle tagging when required.
  • Participate in stock-takes and report low stock levels to supervisors / managers.
  • Report any non-conformities such as temperature deviations, damaged packaging, pest sightings, or expired items.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of dishes, cutlery, tumblers, jugs, serving utensils, containers, and all other catering equipment in the environment.
  • Actively participate in daily briefings, training sessions, and refresher workshops.
  • Complete on- and off-the-job training as required by management.
  • Store clean tableware and equipment appropriately after each meal period.
  • There may be a need to shift to another outlet within a reasonable geographical area and with adequate notice.
  • Perform any additional duties necessary for the effective operation of the dining hall.
  • Undertake other ad hoc tasks assigned by the line manager or Head of Department.

Qualifications / Person Specification

  • Recent graduates or candidates with minimal work experience.
  • Keen attention to detail to promote operational excellence.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Proficiency in English (both written and verbal).
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work under deadlines.
  • Friendly, professional demeanour with strong customer service abilities.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Flexible availability to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends.
  • Possession of a Basic Food Handling Certificate and a valid Typhoid vaccination record.
