JOB PURPOSE

Reporting to the General Counsel Asia, the General Counsel (MYSG) is of a generalist commercial nature and will be the legal point of contact for Magnum Ice Cream entities in Malaysia and Singapore across all business units. This person will provide advice, recommendations and solutions that are not only legally compliant but also commercially viable to enable business growth. The candidate should possess leadership qualities, be commercially minded, have strong business acumen and be able to provide practical and sound legal advice. He / she must be a leader of the highest ethical standards and professional integrity, be driven, accountable and committed to delivering the best results for the business. The General Counsel (MYSG) will also play a key role in supporting the General Counsel Asia in business integrity matters for the countries and to ensure internal and external compliance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide accurate and timely legal advice, identifying risk and providing mitigation for all legal areas including contracts, competition law, anti‑bribery, data privacy, employment and labour law, intellectual property, tax and customs, consumer laws, marketing regulations, and company law.
  • Provide practical, accurate and timely counsel to business partners on a variety of legal topics (labour law, competition law, data privacy, partnerships, international ventures, corporate finance).
  • Advise business on marketing claims and regulatory compliance for all product categories.
  • Prepare materials, training and education for business partners on internal policies, competition law, data privacy and business integrity (code of conduct).
  • Draft and review contracts.
  • Manage IP and brand protection matters.
  • Support General Counsel Asia to evaluate and advise on different risk factors regarding business decisions and operations, the application of effective risk management techniques and offer proactive advice on possible legal issues.
  • Communicate and negotiate with external parties (regulators, external counsel, public authorities, etc.), creating relations of trust.
  • Assist General Counsel Asia in internal investigations for reported non‑compliance including taking any further necessary next steps.
  • Develop and implement internal corporate policies and procedures to meet local regulatory needs.
  • Liaise with and manage external counsels.
  • Manage all phases of pre‑ and post‑litigation.
  • Coordinate with external company secretaries to ensure timely submission of statutory documents and preparation of resolutions.
  • Support the implementation and transition of legal projects (including tech and simplification projects).
  • Business partner communications with external parties including consumers and regulators as required by the business.
  • Support the General Counsel in managing strategies and plans to support the business goals.
  • Keep abreast of legal developments and advise on the potential impact of these developments on the business.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in law or a related field.
  • PQE with a minimum of 7 years of prior in‑house experience (FMCG industry preferable).
  • A strong foundation in local laws and regulations relevant to the FMCG industry, experience in similar industry / business, ability to deal with a variety of matters that may or may not be legal in nature, possess team‑building and leadership skills and business partner skills.

    As publicly announced, it is envisaged that Unilever will internally separate its Ice Cream business by July 2025, at which point this role will transfer to the new Ice Cream company. It is expected that the Ice Cream business will then separate from Unilever by the end of 2025. Any impact on terms and conditions of employment will be communicated in due course. This proposal is subject to consultation where legally required.
