About the Role

The Project Director (PD) is responsible for all aspects of study management, oversight, and client management of a portfolio of projects across one or more regions. The PD may provide oversight to projects managed by Project Managers or Junior staff and will be responsible for the overall management and quality of projects for a client, therapeutic area, or specialty. The PD ensures studies are resourced effectively, managed efficiently, meet objectives within budgets and timelines, and are conducted to the highest standards of GCP, regulatory requirements, and SOPs. The PD may mentor Junior Project Management staff or Clinical Delivery Leads and assist their technical development. Depending on the project, the PD may be named as the Project Lead and be responsible for all aspects of study management, cross-functional leadership, client communication, financial management, and overall study delivery.

Your Responsibilities

Financial and Contractual

  • Analyse monthly financial reports for allocated projects to identify trends and escalation needs.
  • Ensure project teams understand all aspects of project finance and follow escalation pathways.
  • Maintain project utilization, revenue forecast and recognition; identify and implement improvement strategies and escalate significant concerns.
  • Maintain gross margin across allocated projects to meet organizational goals.
  • Review forecasts with Project Leads during month-end processes and develop contingency plans for project slippage.
  • Oversee pass-through report management to ensure timely finalization.
  • Oversee project review reporting to ensure survey responses are accurate and timely; work with Business Development on proposals and pricing; review scope change documentation prior to sponsor submission; maintain a record of scope changes and update pricing tools.
  • Seek opportunities for scope expansion and coordinate with BD & sponsor.

Project Delivery and Reporting

  • Set objectives for core project teams and assess performance against contract, strategy, and approach.
  • Develop study management plans with the core project team.
  • Coordinate progress reports for senior management, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Ensure Project Leads determine resourcing needs and share information with line management.
  • Ensure all projects are delivered per Emerald Clinical requirements and contract terms.
  • Monitor scope sheets and perform monthly time sheet analysis to identify scope creep; escalate as required.
  • Maintain continuity of delivery to improve efficiency and quality; perform ongoing risk analysis and strategic planning.
  • Provide escalation points for major issues; mentor project managers and foster high-performance culture.
  • Model and uphold the company values; ensure cohesive teamwork and effective communication plans.
  • Provide clear guidance on project deliverables and encourage collaboration across teams.
  • Attend and lead project meetings and internal events as required.
  • Customer Focus and Business Development

  • Build high-level relationships with sponsors, key opinion leaders, hospitals, and relevant associations.
  • Collaborate with the BD team on proposals and scope changes for allocated projects.
  • Provide technical advice for process improvements; participate in bid defense presentations as needed.
  • About You

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a science or related field.
  • Experience in clinical trials research (approximately 11 years), including Phase I–IV studies.
  • Minimum 6 years in clinical project management, with global CRO experience preferred.
  • Experience managing global studies across regions and therapeutic indications; full-service studies; early to late-phase experience preferred.
  • Line management experience in project management or clinical operations is preferable.
  • Excellent knowledge of ICH / GCP and applicable regulations; experience with clinical trial management software.
  • Ability to implement project activities in line with regulatory requirements; experience managing vendors and suppliers to successful delivery.
