Job description

The Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation-National Centre (KDSF-NC) is a non-profit organization committed to the welfare of children with Down Syndrome. Our main objective is to assist the students achieve their maximum potential. KDSF-NC implement the Early Intervention Programme (EIP), a special curriculum which emphasizes the development of gross motor, fine motor, speech and language, social, perceptual-cognitive and pre-academic skills. The Centre is run like an ordinary kindergarten with the usual kindergarten activities such as biennial Sports / Concerts, annual Graduation, social and educational visits.

Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapist is responsible for delivering tailored therapy sessions and working closely with teachers, families, and other professionals to support the developmental goals of children with Down syndrome. This includes developing and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs), participating in the Early Intervention Program (EIP), maintaining documentation, and contributing to parent support and training initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct occupational therapy sessions tailored to each child’s developmental needs.
  • Perform assessments for prospective students to determine program suitability.
  • Collaborate with families to develop and implement IFSPs that address each child’s specific needs.
  • Work with teaching staff and therapists to design IEPs aligned with IFSP goals.
  • Provide direct therapy to support developmental milestones identified in the IEP.
  • Prepare and adapt therapy materials to enhance engagement and outcomes.
  • Coordinate with teaching staff to integrate therapy goals into the Early Intervention Program.
  • Partner with parents and external professionals to ensure a consistent, holistic approach.
  • Communicate regularly with parents on their child’s progress and recommend home strategies.
  • Identify gaps in current therapy approaches and propose or implement improvements.
  • Conduct training and workshops for families to empower them in supporting their child’s development.
  • Participate in relevant training sessions, seminars, and workshops to stay current with best practices in occupational therapy and early intervention.
  • Pursue continuous learning, particularly in areas related to Down syndrome and special needs education.
  • Maintain clear, accurate, and up-to-date student records of therapy sessions and developmental progress.
  • Prepare and submit periodic progress reports in accordance with Centre guidelines.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and contribute to team planning and discussions.
  • Support the organisation of Centre events and fundraising activities.
  • Carry out any additional responsibilities assigned by the Operations Director or the Management of KDSF and KDSF-NC, as required.

Requirements

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent qualification.
  • Certified Allied Health Professional (MAHPC).
  • Minimum 1 year of experience conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and implementing therapy (experience with children or developmental needs is preferred).
  • Knowledge of sensory integration and multi-sensory teaching techniques.
  • Experience in early intervention or working with children with special needs is an advantage.
  • Passionate, patient, and skilled in working with children with developmental challenges.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Collaborative team player committed to ongoing learning.
  • Proficiency in English; knowledge of local dialects is a plus.
