The Opportunity (Overview of the role)

The Personal Learning Assistant (PLA) is engaged as an external provider (not employed by the Alice Smith School) and will work under the guidance of the class teacher and Head of Learning Support within an agreed system of supervision. The role is to implement confirmed work programmes with an individual student in and out of the classroom. This may involve detailed and specialist knowledge, assisting the teacher in the whole planning cycle and the management / preparation of resources. The primary focus will be to maintain safety, promote independence and keep the student on task.

Responsibilities / Duties

  • Support for Student
  • Support student development and promote independence in a safe, secure and challenging environment.

  • Support the learning of the individual as identified in the students Pupil Profile or Safety and Support Plan, act as a role model and set high expectations.
  • Encourage the student to interact and work cooperatively with others.
  • Observe, record and support the development and progress of the student to identify individual needs and difficulties and feedback their progress and achievement to the class teacher and Learning Support key worker.
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of the student.
  • Support for Teacher
  • Work closely with the class teacher to modify learning strategies, materials and tasks as needed.

  • Provide feedback to the teacher and Learning Support key worker on student progress and any areas requiring further support.
  • Observe and monitor student responses during learning activities.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of student progress, support strategies and any interventions provided, in line with the requirements set by the Learning Support key worker.
  • Ensure that records are updated regularly and are accessible for review during PLA meetings.
  • Provide general clerical support, e.g. make visuals, procedure resources for agreed activities.
  • Support for the Curriculum
  • Prepare, plan and manage activities to ensure the student is fully involved.

  • Develop independence in the student so they can access learning opportunities.
  • Support for the School
  • Promote the policies and ethos of the school, personal and social and promote positive values, attitudes and good pupil behaviour.

  • Supervise the student on outings and visits as appropriate and if required.
  • Attend relevant staff meetings as required.
  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security.
  • Be a proactive member of the school and class team.
  • Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies / professionals in liaison with the Learning Support team to support achievement and progress of the student.
  • Attend relevant courses and learning activities to update knowledge as appropriate.
  • Treat all information relating to a pupil as strictly confidential and comply with school policy and practice, receiving training where necessary from the school.

    Selection Criteria

  • Practical experience supporting children or young people.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students, teachers, and parents, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team with teachers, other support staff and parents.
  • A friendly nature – empathetic and willing to adapt to best support the student.
  • Understanding of how technology can be used to personalise learning, differentiate instruction and assess student progress.
  • Degree in Education or Psychology.
  • Experience working in a school environment.
  • Training in specific areas such as autism, dyslexia, or first aid.
  • Experience of using Google Workspace and / or Seesaw.
