Overview

Database Administrator (Technical Lead successor) requires in-depth knowledge of RDBMS technology, specifically MS SQL and MySQL, to perform general administration, database maintenance, performance monitoring, security management, infrastructure database design, backup and recovery, automation and health monitoring of the current DB servers and their respective databases for the company and its subsidiaries. This role supports BAU tasks, participates in projects requiring RDBMS expertise, DB server provisioning, engineering, integration, setup and design of database infrastructure based on application criticality measured by RTO, RPO and SLA, and resolves issues related to performance, compatibility, security and accessibility. The role works end to end with various RDBMS / application vendors, resolves technically challenging issues, including audit support, and may require 24 x 7 x 365 coverage when requested by management.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure team members are aware of their daily roles and responsibilities; provide guidance / assistance to junior team members as needed.
  • Conduct regular technical know-how discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions to bring junior DBAs up to speed with current trends and more complex scenarios.
  • Oversee and perform daily routines of general administration and health checks to ensure MS SQL and MySQL RDBMS are error-free and in optimal condition according to SOP.
  • Ensure requests (SR / IR / CR) are properly created, attended and resolved.
  • Proactively address findings from health checks across sources (Manual Health Check, SCOM, MySQL monitoring, Trellix, etc.) following ITIL processes.
  • Ensure backups are performed daily, weekly and monthly per policy in Commvault; rectify issues promptly according to ITIL processes.
  • Review and approve PAM session-related requests on DB sessions for junior DBAs and application teams.
  • Perform production environment assessments for each project during post-provisioning to ensure hosts are stable for testing and implementation.
  • Prepare Implementation Plans, Pre-CAB checklists, application owner approvals and sign-offs for production implementations after Development and UAT.
  • Take ownership of incidents, prepare incident reports, and arrange discussions with stakeholders (application teams, vendors, and principals) to investigate and resolve issues and determine RCA.
  • Participate in application projects (Database development, Migration, Integration, SRA, TRA, PID Assessment and handover) across phases to provide assessment input.
  • Document, drive, coordinate and implement Service Improvement Plans (SIP) for the database team, including automating manual processes, patching, upgrades, maintenance, migration and performance improvements.
  • Support organizational Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and Disaster Recovery (DR) activities related to application and database availability.
  • Perform automated provisioning and hardening of RDBMS instances via Ansible; liaise with vendors for issues; create / amend playbooks for future improvements with vendor collaboration.
  • Review provisioned DB instances to ensure configuration aligns with system design and vendor / application architect specifications (OAT, SAT, PAT).
  • Support incident escalation from application teams, including performance capture, configuration and reporting, performance tuning, capacity assessment, and database restore / recovery when required.
  • Participate in cybersecurity tabletop exercises focusing on infrastructure and database security scenarios.
  • Participate in monthly and quarterly patching for all database servers; pursue automation to minimize manual patching.
  • Ensure all RDBMS are patched according to current standards and provide patch assurance reports with team support.
  • Ensure CMDB / ITAM inventory accuracy for licensing and governance.
  • Participate in audits, cooperating with internal and external auditors and providing evidence / artifacts as required, including assessments.
  • Produce documentation such as KBs, SOPs, guidelines, test plans, project trackers, change trackers and Incident Reports; provide guidance to junior team members as needed.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Diploma in Computer Science or related field.
  • Professional certification in at least one RDBMS discipline (MS or Oracle; vendor-approved).
  • Minimum 5 years of RDBMS experience, including at least 3 years in L2 / L3 support for MS SQL and / or MySQL.
  • Experience across multiple RDBMS areas (BAU, Deployment, Project, Audit, Security, Automation and Reporting).
