Responsibilities

ABOUT THE POSITION

Art Creation and Vision Alignment

  • Ensure the level art team consistently delivers high quality, performant environments that align with both the artistic vision and gameplay needs.
  • Collaborate closely with the Art Director to translate visual goals into actionable layout direction and environmental storytelling.
  • Contribute hands-on to key layout phases, blockouts, or polish passes to help set benchmarks and unblock production when needed.
  • Maintain a high standard of composition, shape design, and visual storytelling in all level environments.

Leadership and Mentorship

  • Champion strong worldbuilding fundamentals including space composition, narrative readability, and traversal clarity while pushing the team to raise quality standards.
  • Provide clear, constructive feedback that empowers artists to grow and improves the team's overall output.
  • Review environment work regularly for consistency, polish, and adherence to vision.
  • Coach senior and mid-level artists on layout, terrain sculpting, and narrative pacing.
  • Identify opportunities for ongoing training, career development, and professional growth—both for yourself and your team.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

  • Act as the primary point of contact for level art across disciplines including Design, Tech Art, Lighting, and Production.
  • Be the connection between all areas affecting the world across all departments, ensuring level art serves both gameplay and visual intent.
  • Collaborate with Production to scope deliverables, flag risks early, and maintain milestone pacing.
  • Pipeline and Tools

  • Partner with Technical Artists to improve workflows, tools, and modular worldbuilding processes.
  • Maintain visual benchmarks, documentation, and consistent pipeline guidelines for layout execution.
  • Stay current with industry-standard tools, workflows, and worldbuilding trends to ensure efficient and scalable practices.
  • Remain on top of evolving techniques, tools, and approaches in worldbuilding and game engines to maintain production relevance.
  • Planning and Risk Mitigation

  • Participate in sprint planning, estimates, and reviews with accurate input on layout scope and priorities.
  • Use team data and task breakdowns to support realistic delivery schedules.
  • Proactively identify blockers, technical issues, or quality concerns early and work with relevant departments to resolve them.
  • Qualifications

  • A strong portfolio demonstrating ownership of full levels or major gameplay zones, with clear layout, visual hierarchy, and storytelling intent.
  • Shipped at least one AAA or high-quality title in a senior or lead level art capacity.
  • Proven expertise in level art workflows from early blockout to final polish, with strong understanding of player flow, space design, and technical implementation.
  • Comfortable working with Unreal Engine or similar real-time engines, including world partition systems and performance optimization.
  • Deep understanding of form, shape, composition, lighting principles, and environmental storytelling.
  • Experienced in providing feedback, mentorship, and coaching to team members.
  • Collaborative mindset with strong communication skills across departments including Design, Lighting, Tech Art, and Production.
  • Fluent in tools like Blender, Maya, Substance Suite, and familiar with level-specific toolsets and editors.
  • Proactive, forward thinking, and passionate about building immersive game worlds.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills—comfortable sharing ideas internally or externally across the team and stakeholders.

  • Experience working on open-world or large-scale multiplayer environments.
  • Experience mentoring remote or cross-regional teams.
