Key Responsibilities

  • Lead R&D Strategy : Define and execute the research and development roadmap for coatings and construction materials, aligning with business goals and market trends.
  • New Product Development (NPD) : Manage the full lifecycle of product innovation—from market need identification and initial formulation to scale-up trials and commercialization.
  • Formulation Expertise : Develop and optimize high-performance coatings, including waterborne, high-solids, and powder systems, with a focus on durability, weatherability, and application efficiency.
  • Laboratory Management : Oversee daily lab operations, including equipment maintenance, budgeting, and capital planning. Ensure all instruments are calibrated and testing protocols are up to international standards.
  • Quality & Compliance : Establish and enforce robust QA / QC procedures. Ensure all formulations and trials meet ASTM, ISO, and customer-specific requirements.
  • HSE Leadership : Promote a strong Health, Safety, and Environment culture within the lab, ensuring full compliance with chemical handling, storage, and disposal regulations.
  • Supplier & Stakeholder Engagement : Collaborate with global raw material suppliers for joint development projects and technical evaluations.
  • Commercial Support : Act as a technical advisor to sales and marketing teams, translating lab insights into commercial advantages and customer solutions.
  • Project Management : Apply structured methodologies (e.g., Stage-Gate) to manage multiple concurrent R&D projects, ensuring timely delivery and cross-functional alignment.

Requirements

  • Degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field (Master’s / PhD a plus)
  • Minimum 10 years’ R&D experience in coatings, paints, or specialty chemicals
  • Strong foundation in formulation, polymer chemistry (epoxies, PU, acrylates), pigment dispersion, and rheology control
  • Proficient in coatings testing methods (e.g., adhesion, gloss, scrub resistance) and analytical tools (e.g., FTIR, DSC, microscopy)
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills
  • Fluent in English; Bahasa Malaysia is an advantage
