A DAY IN A LIFE

As a start up, you can expect your days to be pretty varied. Multitasking is normal, and sometimes, your skills or natural talents will be leveraged to support other business priorities. That said, the bulk of your working hours should involve you having to :

  • Strategic Thinking : The General Counsel should possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, enabling them to identify legal risks and provide strategic guidance to support the company's growth plans. They should be able to align legal strategies with business objectives and contribute to the company's competitive advantage.
  • Legal Expertise : The candidate should have a strong background in law, ideally with experience in corporate law, commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, and international business transactions. In-depth knowledge of relevant laws and regulations in the logistics and e-commerce sectors, particularly in South East Asia, is highly valuable.
  • Strong Communication and Collaboration : Effective communication and collaboration skills are crucial for the General Counsel to interact with stakeholders across various levels of the organisation. This includes senior management, department heads, employees, and external legal partners. The General Counsel should be able to explain complex legal concepts in a clear and concise manner and build relationships based on trust and credibility.
  • Business Acumen : It is important for the General Counsel to understand the logistics industry, the company's operations, and its competitive landscape. This understanding allows them to provide practical legal advice that takes into account the company's commercial goals and challenges.
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation : The candidate should have the ability to assess legal risks, prioritise them based on potential impact, and develop proactive strategies to mitigate those risks. This includes contract risk management, compliance programs, and intellectual property protection.
  • Leadership and Decision-Making : The General Counsel should be a confident and decisive leader, capable of making sound judgments and providing guidance in high-pressure situations. They should be able to navigate through legal complexities, adapt to changing circumstances, and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Adaptability and Learning Agility : In a rapidly growing company, the General Counsel should be adaptable and able to quickly grasp new concepts and legal developments. They should stay updated on relevant laws and regulations, industry trends, and emerging technologies to ensure the company remains compliant and competitive.
  • Ethical Standards and Integrity : As a legal advisor, the General Counsel should demonstrate a strong commitment to ethical standards, professional integrity, and confidentiality. They should act as a trusted advisor, ensuring the company's legal practices align with ethical and legal principles.

Requirements

These are minimum-requirement skills and a ‘must-have’ for the role :

  • Corporate and Commercial Law : Extensive experience in corporate and commercial law is crucial. This includes expertise in contract negotiation and drafting, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, compliance, and risk management. Experience in the cargo, logistics and e-commerce sectors, particularly in cross-border operations, would be highly beneficial.
  • Regulatory Compliance : In-depth knowledge of applicable laws and regulations related to logistics, e-commerce, cross-border trade, intellectual property, data privacy, and employment is essential. Experience in designing and implementing compliance programs and ensuring adherence to legal requirements is highly valuable.
  • Strategic Advising : Experience in providing strategic legal advice to support business objectives and contribute to growth is highly valuable. This includes advising on expansion plans, market entry strategies, strategic partnerships, and regulatory considerations.
  • International Experience : Experience with international business transactions and cross-border operations is advantageous given our regional focus. Familiarity with the legal frameworks, customs regulations, and cultural nuances of the target countries would be valuable for navigating complex international landscapes.
  • Litigation and Dispute Resolution : Experience in handling litigation and dispute resolution is important, as the GC may need to manage legal disputes, negotiate settlements, or represent the company in legal proceedings. Demonstrated expertise in mitigating risks and protecting the company's interests through effective dispute resolution strategies is valuable.
  • Intellectual Property Protection : Strong experience in intellectual property (IP) rights and protection is desirable, particularly in the context of technology platforms, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. This includes strategies for IP portfolio management, licensing agreements, IP enforcement, and handling infringement issues.
  • Leadership and Management : Prior leadership experience of heading legal departments is crucial, ideally across SEA. The General Counsel should have the ability to lead and develop a legal team to meet the requirements of our business, manage external legal partnerships, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Industry Knowledge : Familiarity with the cargo, logistics and e-commerce industries, including an understanding of the competitive landscape, market trends, and emerging technologies, would be advantageous. This knowledge allows the General Counsel to provide industry-specific legal advice and anticipate potential challenges.
