Life Unlimited. At Smith+Nephew we craft and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living.
The successful candidate will be responsible for operating CNC machines, including lathes, 5-axis mills, grinders, and other standard shop equipment. Key tasks include machine setup, tool selection, production runs, and making minor program adjustments. This role also involves handling complex machine setups and supporting production processes to ensure efficiency and quality.
Additionally, the candidate will prepare training materials, document processes, and serve as an on-the-job trainer for new machinists. They will collaborate with engineering teams to support validation and plant setup activities, ensuring smooth operations and continuous improvement.
What will you be doing?
The successful candidate will be responsible for performing sophisticated CNC machining operations, including frequent and sophisticated setups for lathes, mills, and speciality machines. Key responsibilities include ensuring the production of high-quality parts, executing preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting tooling issues to maintain efficient machine performance. The candidate will also perform routine dimensional and visual inspections using measuring tools such as callipers, micrometres, and indicators to ensure product quality and compliance with specifications.
In addition to machining duties, the candidate will play a vital role in training and continuous improvement initiatives. They will mentor Level I, II, and III machinists, providing on-the-job training, crafting training materials, and supporting process improvement projects. The role requires active participation in safety and environmental policies, ensuring compliance with HSE regulations and contributing to health, safety, and sustainability goals. Additional responsibilities may include support in packaging, finishing, and quality control as the team leader requires.
What will you need to be successful?
The ideal candidate should have a high school diploma or equivalent, with a vocational certificate in Precision Machining Technology being highly preferred. A minimum of 5 years of machining experience is required, along with the ability to read and interpret blueprints and operate precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and indicators.
Candidates must successfully pass the Machine Operator test and demonstrate strong knowledge of tooling identification. The role may require initial training abroad (USA, Europe, or China) for up to two months, after which no further travel is expected.
