1. General Clinical Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides total, direct nursing care to patients requiring advanced, skilled or complex care.
- Completes specific competencies as identified by the supervisor.
- Responds to age specific life-saving situations within OT based upon nursing standards and protocols and initiates BLS.
- Ensures correct patient, correct site and correct procedure is being performed.
- Acts as scrub or circulating nurse as allocated by the OT Nurse Manager.
- Sets up the operating room according to the type of operation and as per recommendations.
- Assists the surgeon during operative procedures.
- Ensures all pre, intra and post op documentation is completed in the relevant format and in a timely manner.
- Performs procedures requiring advanced competency skills or training in the expanded nursing roles.
- Competently and safely operate highly specialized OT equipment.
- Receives supervision and direction from OT Nurse Manager.
- Adopts a caring approach to patients and relatives and communicates effectively.
- Assists clinicians with more complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Practice strong patient advocacy role and diligence in the preoperative review of documents and verification of surgical procedure, site and other critical safety checks prior to surgery.
- Enforces strict aseptic and sterile techniques to all aspects of patient care.
- Ensure competency in handling specialized equipment used in OT and to handle equipment malfunction during surgery.
- Competently circulate in emergent and urgent surgical cases and collaborate with physicians and other members of the surgical team during surgical time outs and debriefing procedures.
2. Clinical Leadership Duties and Responsibilities
Serves as a strong clinical leader in the unit.Serves as direct care clinical resource in developing, coordinating, and reviewing the patient’s plan of care.Precepts new hires and nursing interns and mentors nursing staff with identified needs.Mentors new hire and newly assigned nursing staff for orientation and integration into the nursing unit in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the nursing plan of care together with clinicians for carrying out clinician orders, assisting with medical procedures, and reporting changes in the patient’s condition and / or needs.Assesses needs of patients with complex nursing care issues and develops a written care plan with assigned nurse.Assists staff in documentation and revision of care plan and in identification of nursing diagnosis applicable to the patient.Acts as resource to other staff members during the assessment and evaluation of complex patient care and needs.Assists other staff members in improving their knowledge and skills, giving input when needs are identified.Assesses the need for suitable staff development program / s in the assigned clinical area to ensure effective patient care.Develops and upgrades staff's knowledge and skills, promotes development of staff toward excellence.Promotes staff's competencies in specialty by conducting formal teaching sessions, small group and case presentations, on the spot demonstrations.Evaluates the progress of new hires, nursing interns, and other identified staff and gives input to the OT Nurse Manager.Develops and participates in simple research studies for the improvement of nursing practice.Evaluates results of procedural changes on patient care and staff performance.3. Administrative Duties and Responsibilities
Evaluates patient care supplies / equipment and gives input to the OT Nurse Manager.Serves as direct clinical resource in the development, review, revision, and implementation of nursing policies, and procedures, standards of care, and applicable medical organization policies.Assist in the development of work process, protocols and work instructions for OT.Participates in the planning, implementing and evaluating patient care training and unit in-services.Represents OT department on committees, special interest groups, and task forces.Assist in the planning of the budget and the staffing requirements.Assist in implementation of performance improvement activities, record and monitor to ensure action plans are implemented and re-evaluated for improvement.Participate in the action plan to achieve the Goals and Objectives of the unit.Assist in developing marketing strategies and comprehensive packages for the unit.Assist in planning, initiating and evaluating studies and surveys for the improvement of nursing care.Works closely with nursing leadership to improve patient care and staff performance.Collaborates regularly to identify nursing care problems, to plan goals, objectives and programs.Prepares and submits monthly report of plans, progress and problems.Assists in evaluating nursing personnel and planning corrective action if indicated.Performs related duties, as required.#J-18808-Ljbffr
