We are seeking a Microsoft Certified, highly skilled Senior Systems Administrator to play a key role in the design, development, and documentation of our on-premises and cloud-based Microsoft Azure environment. This subject matter expert position requires deep technical expertise in AD, Azure AD, Intune / Entra, Microsoft Defender, SaaS administration, endpoint security, and cloud automation, along with a knowledge of networking. This role works closely with the Solutions Architect to ensure systems and technologies are aligned with the group strategy, ensuring alignment, scalability and adoption of best practices across the IT estate. The role is hands-on, focusing on architecting, implementing, and maintaining cloud infrastructure solutions while ensuring compliance with enterprise change control processes and regulations.
Strong technical documentation skills are essential and experience in network security would be desirable. The role forms part of our existing Infrastructure team and requires collaboration with cross-functional teams across GGS and the group.
Responsibilities
- Deploy and manage cloud resources (e.g., virtual machines, storage, databases) using Microsoft Azure.
- Ensure the security, reliability, and performance of Azure-based infrastructure.
- Collaborate with the Solutions Architect, Development, Operations, and security teams.
- Lead migration of on-premises systems, data and workloads securely to Azure, ensuring compliance and performance standards.
- Implement infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform, ARM templates, and Azure DevOps pipelines.
- Monitor and troubleshoot Azure environments, responding to incidents and identifying areas for improvement.
- Contribute to automation and orchestration efforts to streamline cloud operations.
- Design, deploy, and maintain hybrid IT environments integrating on-premises infrastructure with Azure cloud services.
- Ensure security best practices across hybrid environments, including encryption, and compliance with organizational policies.
- Perform configuration and setup activities such as developing and implementing templates for server builds, setting permissions and rules (e.g., privileged account access management / PIM).
- Work with Network and Applications personnel to assist with system / application / services into a cloud platform.
- Monitor and enhance the security of current and future Azure environments and evaluate scaling and capacity requirements.
- Stay current with Azure updates, emerging technologies, and industry trends to recommend improvements.
- Design and implement disaster recovery and data archiving policies and procedures to ensure data protection and integrity.
- Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to servers, systems, OSs and databases, ensuring processes are documented and auditable.
Required Skills and Competencies
Exceptional understanding of Azure technologies and services (including Azure VMs, Azure App Services, Azure SQL Database, Azure Active Directory, and Azure Storage) and experience in deploying and configuring cloud-based solutions.Strong knowledge of on-premises and cloud infrastructure (Azure, Windows, Linux, VMware, Hyper-V, Active Directory, EntraID).Strong knowledge of backup, restore, recovery and high availability strategies for Microsoft Azure and on-prem environments.Strong knowledge of IaaS and PaaS.Strong experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform; CloudFormation and ARM a plus).Strong understanding of working with a complex Active Directory, Azure AD, LDAP with adherence to standards, procedures, and processes.Advanced knowledge of DHCP, Kerberos and Windows Authentication.Knowledge of network protocols such as DNS, SMTP, SNMP, SSH, SFTP.Knowledge of Cisco network equipment / routing, switching, and firewalls would be beneficial.Exposure to other cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud) is a plus.Experience with monitoring tools (Azure Monitor, SolarWinds).Strong communication skills to collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.Mentor junior team members.Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.Required Education and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).4+ years of experience in a Microsoft Azure Cloud Administrator or Microsoft Azure Cloud Engineer role.6+ years of experience in systems engineering, with a focus on hybrid on-premises and cloud environments.Qualifications
Proven expertise in Microsoft Azure concepts and functionality, and Azure / AD administration.Thorough understanding of ITIL or other IT service management frameworks.Seniority level
