Job Overview
We are seeking a committed and principled Legal Officer to join our Advocacy, Legal Services & Research (ALSR) Unit. This role suits a legally trained professional passionate about justice and gender equality, with a solid foundation in both civil and Syariah law and the ability to engage confidently in public advocacy.
Key Responsibilities
Provide legal advice and assistance through SIS’s helpline platform (Telenisa), particularly on Islamic Family Law, Syariah and civil legal issues and women’s rights.Coordinate and supervise legal aid chambering students, attend meetings with relevant Bar Committees and prepare related documentation as required.Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, policy briefs, law reform proposals and reports.Represent SIS in public forums, stakeholder meetings, community outreach and media engagements.Meet and engage with Members of Parliament, State Assemblypersons and other policymakers to advocate for legal and policy reforms aligned with SIS’s mission.Contribute to legal awareness, capacity‑building sessions and advocacy campaigns.Organise mobile legal clinics, legal information booths, and similar outreach events to increase access to legal assistance and raise public awareness of rights and legal processes.Carry out any other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the management from time to time in line with the objectives of the ALSR Unit and SIS’s mission.Requirements
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from a recognised university.Must be called to the Malaysian Bar.Minimum 1 year of experience as a practising lawyer.Fresh graduate are encouraged to apply.Background in Syariah law is required. Diploma in Syariah Legal Practice (DSLP) is an added advantage.Experience working in legal aid, women’s rights or civil society is an added advantage.Strong legal research, analytical and writing skills including the ability to draft official letters, reports, memoranda, policy briefs and meeting minutes.Good public speaking and presentation skills.Polite, respectful, able to take instructions well and displays professionalism when working with supervisors and colleagues.Upholds integrity, maintains confidentiality and contributes to a cooperative, team‑oriented and respectful work environment.Proficient in both Bahasa Malaysia and English (spoken and written).Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Canva.Ability to use legal research databases effectively.Familiarity with online collaboration tools such as Google Workspace, Zoom or similar platforms.Willing to work long hours and on weekends, when required.Demonstrated commitment to justice, equality and women’s rights.Applicants must read and understand the key responsibilities and job requirements thoroughly before applying.
