Reporting To : Nurse Manager - Labor Ward
Position Summary :
Duties and Responsibilities :
1. Admit patient and record particulars in the labor room register.
2. Perform admitting assessment and review patient history.
3. Take vital signs i.e. pulse, BP, temperature and fetal heart beat and weigh patients.
4. Develop plan of care.
5. Initiate fetal heart monitor.
6. Carry out abdominal palpation to determine the fundus level, position and presentation of fetus on the progress of patient.
7. Perform vaginal examination, interpret fetal heart monitor and determine frequency duration and intensity of contractions.
8. Monitor progress of laboring mother, interpret fetal heart monitor and notify obstetrician when appropriate for progress or problems.
9. Assist mother with breathing exercises, pain management and administer pain medications as ordered.
Prepare delivery room as per infection control guidelines.
Assist obstetrician in administering care during labor, such as with initiation of Pitocin inductions and monitor progress of labor. Mix IV Pitocin drips, adjust flow rate or pump according to Obstetrician's orders. Be alert for abnormalities.
Assist anesthesia with the administration of spinal or epidural anesthetic.
Document nursing care properly on charts, forms and Hospital Information System.
Perform immediate post delivery care of mother and infant as per standard operation procedure.
Perform post partum care and provide patient education to mother : check lochia, episiotomy and fundus, provide instruction in child care, breast feedings and self care to mother, monitor vital signs per policy, report problems to obstetrician.
Check complete placenta after delivery and inform the obstetrician. Ensure the Obstetrician check the placenta for manual removal of placenta procedure.
Write a proper report after the delivery
Perform nursery care on infant and report observations to the pediatrician.
Prepare patient for Cesarean Section following written procedure.
Provide emotional support to mother (patient).
Ensure proper consents and pre-operative assessment is obtained.
Send and receive patient from OR.
Ensure proper documentation is carried out on procedure performed.
Ensure all consumables used are recorded and charged.
Adhere to principles of infection control in obstetric (OB) care.
Display knowledge of specialized OB equipment instruments and procedures.
Check that all equipment are in working order.
Stock OB department, order supplies, request maintenance / ancillary support.
Participate in in-service and continue education specialized for OB / nursery.
Assist in reviewing SOPs related to OB care.
Participate in the orientation / induction of new staff.
Assist the Nurse Manager in the management of Labor room.
Participate in teaching sessions of ante-natal / postnatal classes.
Perform any other duties as assigned or directed.
