Overview
JOB DESCRIPTION : UPPER SECONDARY ENGLISH TEACHER (IGCSE). JOB TITLE : Upper Secondary English Teacher (IGCSE). REPORTS TO : Head of English Department. LOCATION : IMAS International School Kuala Lumpur.
PURPOSE : The Upper Secondary English Teacher (IGCSE) plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality English instruction to students in Years 10 and 11, in preparation for the Cambridge IGCSE English as a First or Second Language examinations. This role demands a deep understanding of adolescent literacy development, effective assessment strategies, and engaging, student-centered pedagogy. The teacher will integrate IMAS’s Islamic values and bilingual approach while fostering a love for literature, academic writing, and critical thinking in learners. As part of the Secondary team, the teacher contributes to the academic rigor, personal growth, and global readiness of IMAS graduates.
Responsibilities
1. Curriculum Delivery and Instructional Excellence
- Deliver the Cambridge IGCSE English curriculum with a strong focus on language proficiency, comprehension, writing, and oral communication.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including EAL students and high achievers.
- Integrate IMAS’s “7 Values” and Islamic worldview into literature discussions, writing tasks, and classroom interactions.
- Foster 21st-century skills including critical thinking, argumentation, and research through inquiry-led lessons.
2. Assessment and Student Progress
Design and administer formative and summative assessments aligned with IGCSE standards and learning objectives.Maintain accurate records of student performance and use data to guide instruction and support intervention strategies.Prepare students thoroughly for IGCSE exams, including past paper practice, exam skills workshops, and revision sessions.Provide timely, constructive feedback to support student growth in writing and speaking.3. Literacy and Language Development
Promote academic literacy through explicit instruction in vocabulary, grammar, writing conventions, and textual analysis.Curate diverse, culturally responsive reading materials that include global and Islamic perspectives.Develop students’ abilities to write for various purposes and audiences, including essays, narratives, reports, and speeches.Encourage independent reading and foster appreciation for a range of literary genres.4. Classroom Management and Learning Environment
Create a safe, respectful, and stimulating learning space that promotes collaboration, creativity, and academic excellence.Uphold high expectations for student conduct, engagement, and work ethic, in line with IMAS policies and values.Utilize classroom routines, student-led activities, and technology tools to enhance learning.5. Professional Collaboration and Development
Collaborate with the English department on curriculum planning, moderation, and instructional strategies.Participate in professional development workshops, school-wide initiatives, and department meetings.Engage in peer observation, reflection, and feedback to continuously improve teaching practice.Mentor junior staff or student teachers when required.6. Parent and Community Engagement
Communicate regularly with parents about student progress, behavior, and academic goals.Conduct parent-teacher conferences and contribute to student progress reports.Involve parents in supporting literacy development at home through workshops or resource sharing.Promote student achievements in English through events like public speaking contests, reading days, and writing competitions.7. Administrative Duties and Compliance
Maintain accurate lesson plans, records of work, attendance, and assessment data.Ensure compliance with school policies on safeguarding, academic integrity, and classroom conduct.Contribute to secondary school documentation such as schemes of work, curriculum overviews, and departmental reports.Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in English, English Literature, or Education with English specialization (required)Teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, B.Ed, or equivalent) (required)Cambridge IGCSE teaching experience (preferred)Minimum 3 years of teaching experience at the secondary levelExperience in international or bilingual school settings (advantageous)Core Competencies
