Overview

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in enterprise initiatives across public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. We recruit globally with 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries and few office-based roles. Engineering managers help teams achieve more and take pride in the results. This is a general track for first-level engineering management positions at Canonical.

We believe open source is transforming the tech sector. Our goal is to make open source easier, more reliable, and more secure for deployment and development. We select engineers from applicants worldwide for brilliance and motivation to advance open source. Engineering managers set direction, focus, and delivery while growing management skills within the team.

A typical first-level software engineering team is based in a single time zone (EMEA, Americas, or APAC) with an Engineering Manager and Senior Engineer dedicated to a product, shaping the roadmap, technical strategy, code, documentation, and community engagement. Both roles are capable of coding and leading work while remaining aligned on team behaviours, norms, and standards. They will undergo management training to speak the same language in the organization.
