A Brief Overview

Reporting to the Head of Underwriting, the Director, Underwriting assumes responsibility for the risk selection and best in class client service in order to meet departmental objectives.

What You Will Do

  • Underwriting case handling for South East Asia markets in accordance with RGA standards, philosophy, and guidelines. Ensure that the decisions are best in class, satisfy client expectations and service turn around times. Ensure that the decisions are best in class and also satisfy client expectations. Participate in development / review of underwriting guidelines and operational manual.
  • Review, assess and offer technical advice on medical history or medicals tests such as RECG, Stress Tests, CT-Scan / MRI, histopathology reports etc. Support underwriters in reviewing Critical illness definitions, able to support with relevant research and medical advise for developing underwriting solutions, guidelines or new product development. (this is indicative list and not as exhaustive list).
  • Plan and assist in client meetings, training, ability to independently lead, organise and execute client UW audit, and other events with internal or external clients and prepare materials, presentations, data analytics for these meetings.
  • Supervise direct reports and ensure the work quality, deliverables are as per requirement. Groom and mentor the team members for skill and competency enhancement and are able to manage internal requirements and client needs as per RGA standards, philosophy and guidelines.
  • Ability to lead, execute versatile skills by participate in Digital Underwriting, product underwriting, data analytics and other projects.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and other stakeholders like pricing, business development, administration, claims, regional underwriting, medical team etc.
  • Internal process / SOP review and assessment on a regular basis and improvements as appropriate. Enhance documentation and processes for smooth induction and work management.
  • Assist Head of Underwriting with up to date internal and external reports, dashboards, and other ad hoc reports etc are generated on agreed frequency and timelines.
  • Support SEA claims team for providing appropriate and timely retrospective underwriting support within agreed turnaround times and expectations.
  • Render prompt, efficient and courteous services to clients and ensure timely and quality service standards are met. Provide on-site underwriting support for cases when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Arts / Sciences (BA / BS) or equivalent related work experience required or
  • MD Medical Doctor preferred with 10+ years' underwriting and claims experience
  • 10+ Years solid experience in life insurance underwriting required and
  • 5+ Years Experience working as medical officer in insurance medicine in a Life & Health insurer or reinsurer preferred or
  • 5+ Years Experience in product development and enhancement an advantage; preferred
  • Medical graduate with proficient insurance medicine knowledge and experience as Medical officer in an insurance / reinsurance company preferred
  • Proficiency in written & spoken English
  • Working knowledge in written & spoken regional SEA languages such as Chinese, Thai, Bahasa, Vietnamese - Technical Skills (preferred)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-motivated, independent and team player
  • Expert in MS office tools (MS Word, MS Power point, MS Excel etc - Technical Skills
  • Comfortable with working with technology, projects and ability to multi task - Technical Skills
  • Professional qualifications (FLMI, ANZIIF, CII or ALU) preferred
