PURPOSE :
The Head of Arabic Language Department is responsible for leading the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of Arabic language instruction across both the primary and secondary schools. This role serves both native Arabic speakers and non-native learners, with a strong emphasis on reading fluency, comprehension, and language acquisition. The role is distinct from Qur'an and Islamiyat, which are under separate Heads of Department. The Head of Arabic Language plays a critical role in ensuring that all students develop the linguistic competence necessary to access Islamic knowledge and express themselves confidently in Arabic.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Curriculum Development and Instructional Leadership
- Design, implement, and continually improve a robust Arabic language curriculum that meets the needs of both native and non-native speakers.
- Align curriculum standards with international benchmarks and IMAS's mission and Islamic ethos.
- Develop differentiated learning pathways to accommodate varying levels of language proficiency.
- Ensure a strong emphasis on Arabic reading fluency, vocabulary acquisition, grammar mastery, and oral communication.
2. Teaching and Learning Quality Assurance
Supervise Arabic language teachers across both primary and secondary levels.Conduct regular classroom observations, lesson plan reviews, and provide meaningful coaching and feedback.Foster a culture of instructional excellence, student engagement, and continuous professional development.Promote effective reading strategies, language games, and interactive learning.Encourage the use of digital tools and multimedia resources to enrich the Arabic learning experience.3. Language Support for Non-Arabic Speakers
Develop and oversee intensive Arabic language programmes for non-native speakers.Monitor progress of students in support programmes and adjust strategies as needed.Ensure non-Arabic speaking students build functional and academic proficiency in Arabic.Maintain an inclusive and encouraging environment where all students feel supported in their language journey.4. Assessment, Tracking, and Reporting
Design developmentally appropriate and proficiency-levelled assessments.Implement diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to measure student growth.Track and analyse student data to identify trends and areas of concern.Ensure reading benchmarks are met, especially in lower primary and supportclasses.
Provide timely reports and updates to parents, Heads of School, and the Academic Office.5. Teacher Development and Capacity Building
Lead regular departmental meetings and collaborative planning sessions.Identify teacher training needs and organise in-house workshops or external PD opportunities.Support teachers in effective classroom management, lesson delivery, and use of assessment data.Mentor new teachers to uphold school standards and nurture a strong team culture.6. Student Engagement and Enrichment
Organise Arabic language enrichment programmes such as debates, storytelling competitions, poetry recitation, and Arabic reading week.Promote enjoyment and appreciation of the Arabic language beyond academic requirements.Work with class teachers to encourage regular Arabic reading and language use across subjects.7. Resource Management
Select and maintain high-quality Arabic language resources, including textbooks, readers, visual aids, and digital content.Establish and manage Arabic reading corners or mini-libraries in classrooms or shared areas.Plan and oversee the department budget for materials and supplies.8. Collaboration and Communication
Collaborate with Heads of Phase and class teachers to support students who are struggling with Arabic.Work closely with the Head of English to balance bilingual language acquisition and address overlaps.Assist the Admissions Team in assessing Arabic proficiency and class placement for new students.Maintain open communication with parents, providing guidance on student progress and strategies for home reinforcement.QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree in Arabic Language, Education, Linguistics, or a related field (Master's preferred)Fluent in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and EnglishMinimum 5 years of Arabic language teaching experience, with leadership or coordination responsibilitiesStrong understanding of Arabic phonics, reading instruction, and language developmentProven experience working with both native and non-native Arabic speakersExperience in differentiated instruction and second-language acquisition techniquesJob Types : Full-time, Permanent
