Officer - Safety & Health

Overview

The Safety Officer is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the safety, health, and environmental compliance of all vessel operations. The role safeguards crew, contractors, and assets by implementing robust marine safety systems, risk management practices, and compliance with international maritime regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure all vessels engaged in the project comply with IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code, and flag state requirements .
• Conduct regular vessel safety inspections, audits, and drills (fire, abandon ship, man overboard, oil spill response).
• Verify the validity and adequacy of all certificates, permits, and statutory documentation for vessels.
• Monitor navigational safety, cargo handling, fuel transfer, and personnel transfers in compliance with safety standards.
• Implement the Project HSE Management Plan and vessel-specific Safety Management Systems.
• Conduct risk assessments, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and Permit-to-Work (PTW) reviews for marine operations.
• Monitor compliance with environmental protection measures (waste management, oil spill prevention, ballast water control).
• Investigate and report all incidents, accidents, and near misses , ensuring root cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Deliver regular safety inductions and toolbox talks for vessel crew and project personnel.
• Ensure crew competency through emergency drills and STCW training compliance .
• Act as the key contact for emergency response coordination , including oil spill contingency and evacuation plans.
• Work closely with captains, chief engineers, project managers, contractors, and regulatory authorities .
