We are hiring a Head of Engineering to lead all technical delivery and engineering capability across our mobile apps, backend systems, and assessment technology — ensuring reliability, security, and velocity as the platform continues to scale and deepen its capabilities.
This role reports to the CEO.
Role Purpose
Lead the engineering function to deliver a secure, stable, high-performance mobile testing platform while advancing our technical foundations for AI-driven scoring, integrity, and automation. Ensure disciplined engineering practices, strong execution, and a culture focused on quality, reliability, and trust.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Set and evolve the platform’s technical direction and architectural standards.
- Ensure reliability, security, scale, performance, and maintainability across all systems.
- Drive modern engineering practices : CI / CD, automation, observability, monitoring, and secure development.
- Oversee all EnglishScore’s platform contracts
Delivery & Execution
Lead engineering planning, scoping, and execution in partnership with Product.Ensure disciplined release processes for mobile apps and backend services.Balance innovation with platform stability and long-term architecture.Data & Compliance
Ensure that EnglishScore follows industry best practices (GDPR, ISO 27001, Penetration Testing)Oversee our bug bounty programmeEnsure that EnglishScore maintains a clean and reliable data to continuously monitor our performanceMobile & Backend Excellence
Oversee architecture and delivery across mobile (iOS / Android) and backend services.Strengthen integrity, test security, and anti-cheating measures.Maintain high performance and seamless user experience from test-taking through certification.AI & Capability Development
Support the adoption of AI / ML in scoring, security, and operational workflows.Ensure infrastructure readiness, monitoring, and safe rollout of AI-enabled features.People & Culture
Lead, coach, and develop engineers across disciplines.Establish strong delivery standards and clear technical decision-making.Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.Cross-Functional Partnership
Partner closely with Product to align roadmap and execution and support enterprise reliability and operational readiness.Collaborate with British Council technology teams to ensure interoperability and compliance.First-Year Outcomes
Clear technical roadmap aligned to product priorities and platform integrity.Higher reliability and stability across mobile and backend; measurable quality gains reflected in great test taker experience from testing to certification.Strengthened test‑integrity systems and data‑driven monitoring frameworks.Streamlined and disciplined engineering processes (CI / CD, testing, release).Successful integration of foundational AI‑enabled workflows where appropriate.Strong cadence and alignment with Product, Operations, and BC technology stakeholders.Experience & Skills
8+ years of engineering leadership experience with mobile‑first products at scale.Currently we’re using MVVM Kotlin (Android), Swift UI+Combine (iOS), Flask / FastAPI and Postgres (backend), and Vue for our web applications. Familiarity with the above are bonus.Proven ability to architect and operate reliable mobile and API‑based systems.Experience running disciplined engineering practices in a distributed team environment.Hands‑on technical depth, able to guide decisions and review architecture.Strong grasp of security, data protection, and risk mitigation for high‑trust systems.Previous experience monitoring and ensuring data hygiene and compliance.Experienced in third‑party platform contract management and negotiations.Strong understanding of GDPR, ISO27001 and other industry standards.How You Work
