Overview
Provide strategic leadership and oversee all nursing operations within the healthcare facility to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care while managing and developing the nursing staff.
Job Descriptions
- Organize, direct and coordinate with the other services in the Facility to ensure smooth workflow to always facilitate the continuity of safe and quality patient care; whilst achieving optimal client satisfaction.
- Perform daily unit / ward rounds to visit patients in the wards when possible, conduct random night rounds, monitor progress of patients (especially post-operative and critical patients), be informed of potential litigation cases, visit patients following adverse events, evaluate nursing care rendered, advise Unit Manager / Nurse-In-Charge where and when necessary, and advise Deputy CNO / NM on situational problems encountered on site.
- Conduct monthly meetings with the Nursing Management Team to discuss issues related to the operations of the Nursing Services to improve service delivery and resolve pertinent issues.
- Attend ward / unit meetings as an advisor to improve the unit’s operations / services.
- Present data and analysis of incidents, deviations from best practices, clinical indicators, etc. at hospital clinical committee meetings to improve operations.
- Participate in Heads of Services (HOS) meetings chaired by CEO / GM / OM; work towards common goals.
- Monitor daily 24-hour nursing reports for significant incidents; follow up visits, deploy staff to busy units, or render assistance as required.
- Submit monthly nursing service reports (nursing statistics, performances, activities, improvements, and achievements) to the Group Chief Nursing Officer and CEO / GM for service updates.
- Monitor, follow up closely and report any adverse events within 24 hours to KPJ Head Office, Group Chief Nursing Officer, and relevant parties for timely resolutions.
Human Resource and Development
Participate in recruitment, interviews and selection of nursing staff to ensure appropriate manpower for optimal capability and competency.Review and monitor key orientation programs for new staff to ensure alignment with policies, SOPs and work requirements.Create and maintain a conducive working environment that encourages quality patient care and patient / staff satisfaction.Provide and participate in continuous nursing education (CNE) programs; organize in-service training for nurses to update knowledge and skills; motivate Unit Managers and staff to pursue post-basic courses, Bachelor / Master programs, etc.Assess and appraise job performances of Nursing Management Team for promotion and confirmation of services.Cooperate with KPJ Healthcare University regarding student nurses’ clinical training and renewal of annual practicing certificates for trained nurses.Organize annual leave plans and duty roster of the nursing management team to ensure optimum staff utilization.Coach and motivate the team to engage in their work and address patient, relative and staff complaints using appropriate communication channels; monitor and counsel staff with performance issues or non-compliance with policies and ethics before disciplinary action.Policies and Procedures
Review and initiate revision of hospital and nursing policies and procedures as needed.Implement established Nursing Policies and Procedures and ensure staff comply with quality and safety systems (e.g., MS ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, Patient Safety Goals and National Nursing Audits, etc.).Initiate regular audits on adherence to policies and procedures of quality and safety systems.Facilities and Equipment
Monitor all Unit Managers.Keep accurate records of all equipment, medical supplies and drugs in their units.Ensure Biomedical equipment is calibrated and serviced according to service contracts.Follow up with Unit Managers / Biomedical personnel on compliance to the Preventive / Predictive Maintenance schedules.Collaborate with end users to prepare proposals justifying purchases of biomedical equipment and medical / surgical supplies.Collaborate with suppliers / vendors to provide training on equipment and supplies.Safety and Quality Improvement Activities
Promote activities contributing to continuous improvement of the nursing service (Quality Assurance, Infection Control, Fire and Safety programs).Facilitate quality initiatives and improvement activities in the facility.Monitor staff adherence to quality and safety systems, Baby Friendly Hospital Initiatives, and Standard People Practice.Adopt and promote Patient Safety Goals as recommended by safety authorities.Monitor incident reporting, investigation, and root cause analysis; initiate corrective / preventive actions.Comply with Occupational Safety and Health Act requirements and maintain a safe working environment.Job Requirements
Registered Nurse with valid Annual Practicing Certificate from Nursing Board of MalaysiaBachelor of NursingAny post-basic in nursing recognized by the Nursing Board of MalaysiaPreferably hold a master’s degree or enroll in a master’s program within two years of promotionMinimum 10 years’ experience as Nursing leadersSeniority level
