Job Summary :
The Technical Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the day-to-day operations of Technical Department, ensuring the efficient and effective performance of systems, equipment, or machinery. This role requires the Technical Manager to ensure that the fleet's performance, maintenance, and compliance are aligned with the company's long-term goals. The Technical Manager is responsible for leading, mentoring, and coaching a team of Technical Superintendents, offering strategic direction and guidance on both daily operations and long-term projects.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Fleet Technical Management & Optimization :
Oversee the technical aspect and maintenance of the fleet, ensuring vessels operate at optimal efficiency, safety, minimal operational downtime and in full compliance with all maritime regulations.
- Develop and implement comprehensive preventive maintenance programs for vessels, minimizing downtime while ensuring peak performance.
- Manage the technical department's budget, ensuring cost-effective maintenance practices and appropriate allocation of resources to achieve operational goals.
- Oversee the technical performance of the fleet, ensuring high performance through proactive maintenance and minimizing downtime.
- Utilize technical data analytics to evaluate maintenance efficiency, applying industry best practices for optimization.
Drive continuous improvement by integrating advanced technologies and processes to enhance fleet performance and sustainability.
Team Leadership & Development :
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of Technical Superintendents, Chief Engineers, and maintenance personnel, aligning their work with strategic objectives while fostering professional growth and continuous learning.Provide ongoing technical support and troubleshooting assistance to resolve operational challenges efficiently.Collaborate with HR to develop and implement training and development programs to ensure the team stays at the forefront of industry trends and technological innovations.
Compliance & Risk Management :
Ensure the fleet consistently adheres to all relevant regulatory, safety, and environmental standards, including international maritime regulations and flag state requirements.Proactively manage risks associated with fleet operations by identifying potential technical issues and implementing effective mitigation strategies.Assist in internal and external audits, inspections, and certification processes to maintain compliance with company policies and external rules and regulations.
Project and Resource Management :
Manage the technical aspects of vessel construction, retrofitting, and major upgrades, ensuring adherence to deadlines, quality standards, and regulatory compliance.Assess and engage external contractors, service providers, and suppliers for repair services, spare parts, and maintenance projects.Oversee key technical projects such as fleet upgrades, dry-docking, and new vessel construction, ensuring alignment with business priorities and successful on-time, within-budget delivery.Collaborate with shipyards, contractors, and internal teams to ensure the timely achievement of project milestones within budget constraints.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation :
Continuously assess the fleet's technical capabilities to identify opportunities for improving efficiency, reducing costs, and enhancing overall performance.Stay updated on advancements in maritime technologies and propose the integration of innovative solutions to enhance fleet operations and performance.
Cross-functional Collaboration :
Collaborate with both internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure that technical initiatives and projects align seamlessly with the broader business objectives, facilitating cross-departmental support and integration.Serve as the primary technical liaison between the company, regulatory bodies, and external service providers, ensuring clear and consistent communication.Job Requirements :
Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, CoC 1 Marine Engineer, Naval Architecture, or a related field.Minimum of 8 years in technical management within the maritime industry, particularly with experience in fleet management or vessel operations.Hands-on experience with vessel dry-docking, retrofitting, and newbuilding projects.Comprehensive knowledge of maritime regulations, including SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, and international classification societies.Familiarity with maritime technical software and management systems.Strong leadership and people management skills.Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.Solid project management expertise, particularly with fleet maintenance and technical projects.
